From their inception in 2015, The Hollow Truths have been distilling their sound through multiple EP's and one full length album. The band self-describes their sound as "modern 90's." With their focus on storytelling and emphasis on the pop elements of alt rock, they often draw comparisons to many bands of that era. Singer/songwriter Brett Buehler says he often finds inspiration for lyrics in "books, habits, relationships, & Taco Bell." During live performance the band focus on making a conscious effort to entertain the crowd as though they were in the audience themselves. Based out of Baltimore, MD the band continues to play at venues on the east coast and beyond. In 2023 the band made it as far as 6th St in Austin, TX for SXSW. Local radio station WTMD states, "They are rock you can relate to; offering honest storytelling over crunchy jams."
"Gimme Back My Guitars" Single Review
The melodic vocals kick right in to get the track moving along its steady pace from the get go. The Rock vibes are on point as the guitars begin to swirl around to create even more dynamic depth. The Rock radio friendly tones shine bright as the chorus soars with its confidence. The subtle background guitar work is excellent and builds up and simmers back down to a steadier tempo as it veers closer to the two minute mark. The three minute mark showcases a stellar guitar solo that helps close things out along with the subsequent chorus for the remaining minute of the track.
Verdict:
Their new single looks to light up the Alternative Rock scene with their ultra catchy Rock flair.
-Interview- (5/2/23)
1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name "The Hollow Truths" and is there any meaning behind it?
We've all been playing music for a long time on our own prior to playing together. The sound was mostly tailored to my guitar style and vocal range which is pretty baritone. The band name comes from a song lyric by my favorite band "Mischief Brew." The song is called "Thanks Bastards." I feel the name describes what I write about lyrically. In the sense that the truth is usually relative.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
I hope it's thought provoking or entertaining.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
"Modern 90's".
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
Bees!, Menzingers, and T-swift.
5. How has Covid affected what you do?
Is that still a thing?
6. What’s your take on the current state of Rock?
All genres of music are cyclical as it pertains to popularity. So rather than declare rock being dead or something, which it's not, I'd just say it's dormant in the pop culture sense. Which maybe makes it more punk philosophically.
7. What's the current music scene like there in Maryland?
Fairly vibrant for an east coast city. We have Annapolis, Baltimore, DC, and Frederick being our primary nodes I'd say. Each local has a slightly different vibe but we try our best to support everyone with our podcast for local music. The Part-Time Rockstar Podcast.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
That they don't pay enough?
9. What's next for The Hollow Truths?
Write songs, drink beer, play shows, see more cities, make new friends.
10. Any shoutouts?
You, Mike, for helping promote local artists. Felix at The Hanger Studio here in Maryland for always helping produce us. Will, our drummer, for always being a soldier in any and all terrain. Alex for hosting band practice and being a guitar guru. Christian and Brendan on bass. Taco Bell.
