Sounds like: Progressive Rock
From: New Jesery
1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound?
Music was always in my life from day one. My parents had a very large record collection that I would thumb through and listen to frequently. This included Led Zeppelin, James Brown, Chicago, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Phil Collins. My stepfather was into doo-wop music and Frank Sinatra. My sister liked Broadway and show tunes. So I had a very wide breadth early on. But it wasn’t until I saw Nirvana on MTV at age 6 that I was truly bitten by the bug. That was Ground Zero for me as an artist. Alternative Rock was huge at the time, and so I learned a lot from those bands. I started playing guitar around then as well, learning everything I could from those artists. Around 15 years old, I heard “Fragile” by Yes, and again, my life’s course was forever changed! I began feverishly practicing the guitar, trying to match Steve Howe’s finesse and creativity. King Crimson, Frank Zappa, and Gentle Giant were also seismic shifts in my conscious over time! As I became a young man, my love for progressive rock began to include jazzier influences such as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever.
I formed Mythology in early 2007 at age 20, trying for the first time to both lead a band, and write my own progressive rock music. At the time, I was unsure if I could even do that, but I think I made good on that promise! We’re coming on 20 years now!
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
Most of all, I want people to be excited by it. There is a huge sense of adventure and daring to what we do. We all take it very seriously, and I think the results speak for themselves. Much of the music I enjoy takes you on a journey to some other world, and I try to bring that to Mythology. Many of our songs are narrative-driven, and tell a deliberate tale to the listener. Even the instrumental sections progressive the stories to some degree.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Mythology is a progressive rock trio that incorporates a huge range of influences at a moment’s notice. One minute you may be in a pastoral outer space landscape, the next may be a polyrhythmic rubik’s cube, the next may be an all-out shred fest, and then perhaps a tender, sweet ballad. Nothing is off limits!
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
Consider The Source is my favorite band going right now. So definitely them. My buds in Thank You Scientist would be great to tour with. And A South New Jersey band called The Tea Club is also very extraordinary.
5. What's your thoughts on AI generated music?
AI, while a great idea, is already being used to create art. In my mind, that’s a little dangerous. AI should be taking out our garbage, and washing our dishes. But we immediately went for the artists with it… Art is a job people WANT to do. AI should be doing the jobs that the average person does NOT want to do.
The less cynical side of me thinks that AI can used to a good advantage though. I’m sure people said the same thing about the use of synthesizers and electronic instruments in music. That it may mark the Apocalypse for music, but it still carried on, regardless.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Progressive Rock?
Prog, Jazz Fusion, et al, is alive and well! It did lay dormant for a bit though. When the band first started, I really didn’t know if any other bands in my region doing prog music. Now, it seems there’s a healthy abundance of it! I find it refreshing, and it gives a person like me some hope! I feel it’s the one genre of music that truly has never died since 1969. While other genres came and went, prog muddled through somehow. And I’m very thankful it did!
7. What’s the current local music scene like there in New Jersey?
New Jersey has some great artists residing here! Prog and otherwise. And I live maybe 45 minutes outside of New York City, so there’s even more of a high volume there for underground artists just ripping it up! Some of my current favorites are: Edgeways, Everstill, Karmic Juggernaut, We Used To Cut The Grass, The Tea Club.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
Look… They’ve never once made it easy for artists to earn a living from their music. So I am happy to take whatever payout I get weekly. I used to make nothing at all from my recordings! The dynamic arc of going from major record labels, to independent artists using streaming services, which freakishly resemble the old major record labels, is a funny thing to me. We’ve come full circle.
9. What’s next for Mythology?
Playing some more shows for the remainder of 2026, of course. I have begun to accumulate ideas for the next record, since I endlessly compose music. Hopefully just getting in your ears!
10. Any shoutouts?
Every artists I mentioned earlier. My bandmates Jordan and Dave who are invaluable and bring their incredible spice to the music. Our Engineer/Mixer Shane Stanton over at Glower Studios in Boonton, NJ. He has made the last several records really come alive in a special way! Everyone that’s ever been in the group over time. Luckily, not too many lineup changes in 20 years! Anyone that has ever listened over the the years! The fact that I get to lead this band and play the kind of music we do is a true blessing!
