1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound?
We’d all played in various bands before, and when we came together, we already had plenty of experience. When we formed Salt Mirror, we just wanted to play the kind of music we’d always wanted to, without paying attention to what’s trendy, what’s cool and whatnot. Although we’re fans of pretty different genres (from Midwest emo and punk rock to metal and beatdown hardcore), we’ve somehow managed to find common ground and understand each other. And a big shoutout to our amazing sound engineer — this is our second release with him, and we’re always happy with the result.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
We'd be very happy if they could join us in our straightforward music, and realize that maybe there’s something in each song that resonates with them, something about their feelings and worries. We try to keep things simple in our music, which allows everyone to experience something personal.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Not polished, emotionally raw, melodic, often introspective and angry.
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
That’s a hard question! I think we’d all agree on Deftones for sure. But after that we’d have such different picks that we’d probably end up fighting over it.
5. What's your thoughts on AI generated music?
AI is everywhere now, and you can’t escape it. But you won’t find any AI in our music for sure unless it stands for Accidental Improvisation. We love doing that stuff, and we come up with lots of ideas on the go while recording our songs in the studio.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Rock/Metal?
We think Rock and Metal are in a really interesting place right now. The boundaries between genres are becoming less important, and you can hear bands mixing metalcore, alternative rock, nu-metal, hardcore, shoegaze, electronic music and even pop influences without worrying too much about labels. We really like that because it gives artists much more freedom to experiment and develop their own sound. At the same time, there are so many new bands releasing great music that it can be difficult to stand out. But overall, we think heavy music is very much alive — it’s just constantly evolving.
7. What’s the current local music scene like there in Belgrade?
Belgrade has a relatively small but very active alternative and heavy music scene. There are a lot of talented bands here, and because the scene isn’t huge, you often see people from punk, hardcore, metal and alternative music crossing paths and supporting each other. We’ve had the opportunity to play shows with local bands as well as international acts coming through Belgrade, which has been great for us. Of course, being based in Serbia has its challenges when you want to reach a wider European or international audience, but at the same time it gives the scene its own character. We’d definitely love to see more international bands coming through Belgrade and more Serbian bands getting opportunities to play abroad.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
We’re not a big enough band to worry about it yet. We’re getting a few cents from streaming which for example is gonna cover some of our upcoming merch expenses. But of course we think musicians deserve better and should be getting much more from these big guys who earn millions off of them.
9. What’s next for Salt Mirror?
We’ve got one more single coming up, already our fourth one, called “My Own Canvas,” which is due out on September 18 and which we think will make a lot of emocore and melodic hardcore fans happy. Then there’s our EP “Safe to Sink” dropping on October 2nd which will feature one more track called “Waves.” We’re also planning to film a studio live session, and on October 16th we’re playing our EP release show here in Belgrade with a few other cool bands, so it’s gonna be fun! We really hope a lot of people are gonna love our new music and come to the show.
