-Interview- (10/20/25)
1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound?
We each individually got started at different times, progressing at different rates but we became a band a little over a year ago, meeting through mutual friends. Developing our sound has been an ongoing discussion and challenge but the way we see it, we want it to be a natural process. As people, we mature and grow, and it’s part of being a musician and an individual as well. Pushing through those growing pains and figuring out who you are, and who you want to be is all part of the process.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
The way we see it, music depicts what life means, we want to put meaning in someone's life, no matter who it is. We want to be a safe place for people, no matter who they are, or where they’re from. We want people to take away something positive from our music and know that they are not alone in their struggles.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Our sound contains the poetic qualities of The Tragically Hip infused with the progressive nature of Rush. Musically, it contains textures of grunge and riff rock paired with alt-rock.
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
The Glorious Sons, Crown Lands and Greta Van Fleet.
5. What's your thoughts on AI generated music?
In short, we really think AI generated music is a threat to art as whole and moreover art as expression. Art gives texture to humanity, it gives reason and it confirms what it means to be a human. AI cannot express emotion and it lacks human experience. We learn from experience and music explains that. Something that isn’t human can’t tell you what it means to be a human.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Rock?
We would say rock is definitely on the uprise amongst our generation and that is great to see. We think within the next decade that will see rock return to its full state as it was before, we hope to be one of the bands that catalyzes that reaction.
7. What’s the current music scene like there in Canada?
The current local scene is definitely active but to a degree it feels exclusive at times. It’s a lot of who you know rather than skill and grit (which is unfortunate to see). We think music should be an inclusive space where anyone can start and become something.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
It definitely is unfortunate how little artists get paid on streaming services, but we understand everyone has to make a buck. We’d like to see little improvements, because we know we can reach a better middle ground.
9. What’s next for EMERG?
Right now, we are in a state of planning, putting a lot together for 2026. We have a single coming out in Jan (which will be the counterpart to Band Tee), our second album which we plan on starting to record early next year and we plan on playing loads of shows to lots of people.
10. Any shoutouts?
We’d like to shout out our biggest supporter/multi-purpose roadie, who is always helping out on the road, and helping out anyway he can, our buddy Lucas. He’s the best, and he helps the shows go so smoothly. We’d also like to mention all of the great people we work with, producers, artists and photographers as well as friends, family and our fans who constantly support us no matter what.
