1. What's new with Fixed Fate?
A whole lot actually! I just put 2 new singles out today that have music videos to go along with them. That was a lot of fun to do! These two were the first time I've made a music video before, I've always been afraid they would come out cheesy or insincere. But I've had a lot of lucky breaks this year with meeting talented people (particularly FuFlay Productions who helmed both these videos) and being offered some great opportunities so I figured what the hell..
2. What can you tell us about the new music?
Well for starters, there's a ton more where that came from! These two were obviously stand alone songs, but they come from one overarching concept album I wrote called 'Pink Cloud Syndrome' which will hopefully be out later this year. These two are a little softer than some of the other stuff I've written, but for anyone who's followed my music career all the way back to Raining Again knows I tend to make songs across the whole spectrum of "rock" music. These new ones came out great though! I've been recording with a producer named Kyle James (KL Studios) and for whatever reason we've been able to lock in this really strong acoustic sound that's getting me really amped up for recording even more!
3. What have been some highlights within the past year for the band?
The new singles and videos of course, but for the most part my favorite stuff always happens on stage. Every year my other band Broken Clovers plays a homecoming show at the Strand Theater- that's always a blast. Opening for Stephen Pearcy was a trip, especially with it being in my hometown at Cohoes Music Hall. Getting back into the studio and that feeling when you hear a song you wrote coming together piece by piece is unmatched. I'll be chasing that the rest of the year!
4. Your visual style (artwork, music video, etc.) has always been impressive, what can you tell us about that?
I owe all the visuals to an amazing artist named Oksana Mazur from Ukraine. She's done every album and single cover since Icarus and I just love her art style. I have a bunch of concept work from her just making various mockups for releases and other promotional material that I want to find a way to put out (probably as covers for new songs) because it would be a shame for the world not to see the incredible work she does.
5. What are some pre-show rituals you may have?
Grab yourself a black tooth grin and plug in! I try to warm up a little bit, but for the most part the day of show things are pretty spontaneous and different from one to the next.
6. What's your favorite show you've ever played and why?
The next one! That's a tough one to pick, I love all of them for different reasons. My first show ever I was about 11 years old and nervous as hell, but I look back on that one pretty fondly. There have been so many milestones over the years, I loved street performing in Lake George every summer. Eventually moving up into the actual venues by the water was cool as hell, any theater is always a good time. I love the Strand, Cohoes Music Hall...I went on tour briefly with a country singer playing colleges that was pretty wild. This doesn't really answer your question does it XD
7. What's something you wish you could change about your local music scene?
The emphasis on doing covers. I get it, for whatever reason the average person out there would rather hear stuff they already know as opposed to taking a chance on a new band and maybe they suck, maybe they're your new favorite thing. People gotta get out more too, covid's over people!!
8. What are you currently listening to?
I'm always finding new stuff, even if it's just new to me. Right now I've been blasting a lot of Buddo (White Fear Chain, Last Crack, Stockard Jettison), Bruce Dickinson, Joe Holmes, Babylon A.D., Vince Neil, Freak of Nature, The Rat Race, Left for Dead...I could do this all day. I use streaming services to find as much new music as possible so day to day my answer changes.
9. What do you wish to accomplish in the next year?
I gotta get this third album finished and released, there's no question there. But like any other year I'm always looking to play live more often and I'm writing new music all the time. It's full speed or nothing in the Fixed fate camp
