From: Colorado

1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name "Mordent" and is there any meaning behind it?

The band was started in 2007, by the founder Zach. It had a bunch of members over the years, but in its inception there was Jared on guitar, Moos on bass, Mike on drums and Zach on guitar/vocals. A bunch of metal heads wanting to do metal things. Mordent is focusing on producing an album, and actively looking for members to fill any spots anyone may be interested in. It’s evolved so much and it can evolve more with a new lineup.

Mordent came from a random word found in a dictionary in high-school. Zach wanted something metal sounding, but beautiful at the same time. Keeping with the theme of the music. Mordent rolls of the lips and you think “oh yeah, I’m gonna get my ass kicked” and the heavy parts of the music contributes to that. It means: a rapid alternation of a note with the note immediately below or above it in the scale, which is music theory. It adds to the beauty because it’s a word used to explain part of the theory, which was the root of music from a classical perspective. So you may get your ass kicked, but then be presented with a pretty flower somewhere in there too. That’s what we’re going for.

2. What do you want people to take away from your music?

Mordent has roots that are heavy in metal, but has evolved into an eclectic indie-rock band because music takes you where it wants to. We also want listeners to be provided the unique opportunity to feel the full range of emotional connection you get from listening to it. Sometimes heavy does that, sometimes something a little softer does it.

3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?

If you were to get Metallica, Mumford and Sons, In Flames, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra to where some 80’s outfits, then fall in love, and participate in some baby-making, it would probably be the easiest way to describe the sound we go for.

4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?

There are so many… if I had to pick from the gigantic influence of the litter available… it would be In Flames and/or Trivium.

5. How has Covid affected what you do?

It hasn’t. It sucked, but that creative side to what you do should always be present if it’s fueled by healthy emotion and passion. FYI, there is an instrumental on our first-coming album called “Corona 3.0”. No correlation. To the virus. May have been drinking something tasty by the same name when the song was written and that name stuck. And there may have been 3 variations of the song before the final product… because, tasty drinks do that.

6. What’s your take on the current state of Progressive Metal?

I don’t have any critiques. If you’re passionate about music you’ve made a friend here in Mordent. Just keep contributing to genre’s people love.

7. What’s the current music scene like locally there in Colorado?

Colorado has a cool music scene. It’s like what Portland, OR used to be in the glory days. As is true with music always, it’s consistently evolving and the genre you may fancy ebbs and flows through the veins in this state. Even if it’s at a low it’s still pumping through the heart of the music scene here somewhere.

8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?

We should probably get serious about this question.. but, when we think music, we think about the feeling it gives us, the release we get and give to other people. It kind of a spiritual thing. We’ve never been taken with how much money we get for it. We pour our souls into. It would be pretty swell to get paid every now and again though.. *cough* buy the album when it drops (hopefully at the end of 2022).

9. What's next for Mordent?

We’re focusing primarily on releasing our first-coming album entitled “Don’t Be Weird”. Tentatively scheduled for the end of the year 2022.

10. Any shoutouts?

Shout out to all the fans of Mordent. This doesn’t go anywhere without you. Especially user: 324334569 on SoundCloud. This dude bumps Mordent tunes almost everyday. Smooches to you brother/sister.
