Sounds like: Post Hardcore

1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name “Polarities” and is there any meaning behind it?

The name Polarities first arose when Mike and Dave had the idea to work together and try to write some music back in late 2013. However, Polarities didn’t become official until June 2014, once some of the pieces fell into place. Our sound comes from an expression of each of our individual influences and tastes, while still being honest about what we all want to achieve musically. Polarities is defined as the presence or manifestation of two opposite or contrasting principles; Dave and Mike definitely represent some pretty contrasting vocal styles, but still coalesce to create one collective vision.

2. What do you want listeners to take away from your recent "Bury Me" single? How has the response been to it thus far?

We are trying to do more than just scream until our throats hurt. We want to challenge ourselves and establish our own unique sound in a vastly populated genre. As far as the response goes; it didn’t quite meet our expectations. We are extremely grateful for the support we had received, but we’re really trying to extend our reach to maximize our exposure.

3. What can people expect from your live show?

As much as we are musicians, we take pride in ourselves as entertainers. We strive to keep the energy upbeat and keep the crowd involved at all times.

4. What's your favorite track to play live?

Our favorite song collectively to play live would be “Early Graves.” It’s our second song recorded as a band. Between the crowd participation and the overall freedom to literally just “rock out” and let loose, it really gives us a chance to connect with everyone.

5. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?

Doesn’t really matter honestly, we just want to hit the road!

6. Any crazy show stories?

Well, we are a fairly new band to the post-hardcore scene, and we are all a pretty chill bunch of dudes. Check back, we may have some stories soon!

7. What’s your take on the current state of post hardcore?

As a whole we feel as the genre is going through a transitional phase. People are sick of hearing the same sound over and over again, and it’s very hard to set yourself apart while remaining familiar enough to relate to what’s been done before.

8. What’s the current music scene like there in Illinois both locally and state wide?

Recently, there seems to be a decent amount of upcoming talented bands from the Chicago-land area, more so than it has been in the past years.

9. What’s your take on legal/illegal music downloading?

Download! As long as they support the band, buy their merch, and go to their shows!

10. What’s next for Polarities?

Well, we are currently in the process of writing a new EP and will be hitting the studio this up-coming winter. In the meantime, we are looking to play as many and reach as many listeners as possible. We are also working on some new merch, as well as trying to get a few short tours for 2016!

11. Any shout outs?

Of course, we would like to give a shout out to Sam Henderson at Always Be Genius Recording Studio, located in Indiana! Sam has really helped us a lot over the time we’ve been working with him. He has really helped shape the sound of Polarities.
